So It's the 7th day of the new year, I realize I'm moving
onto the next stage of production and havent updated the work so far. One of
the first thing I will talk about will be the Mood boards for both Lilly and
Mary. I find Mary a rather easy character to find reference for as she is a
more common archetype,
The general outlook toward Mary is an unfiltered character
She is who she is and she won't hide it. She will act before thinking, her
emotions are expressed and clearly read. She has confidence in herself while be
a character who people can approach.
Here is her Mood board,

"Up", "Madagascar 3", "Toradora!", "Mulan", "The Road to Eldorado", "Robotic;Notes" and "Howls Moving Castle" |
Each of these character either hold one or all of Mary's
traits, The main point however is to be
able to put both Marys mood board and Lilly's together and have people being
able to compare and identify the atmosphere of either character and this is why
I have limited the amount of images to one that show the character expressing themselves
along with a vibe or atmosphere in each image itself.
Lilly mood board on the other hand had a hell a lot of bumps
in the road. I was short on finding and visualizing a shy character, this lead
her into being formed as a daydreamer. This allowed me to visualize her as a
character but not find references for her. This had me look more towards the atmosphere
I wanted Lilly to have. I had established she would be on her own, However did
she prefer to be alone or was isolated from her peers ? I decided on both, This
helped me decide on references. The characters I was now looking for were characters
who gave off an atmosphere which made them feel unapproachable. I visualized
Lilly be calm and collected while having confidence in the things she does and
these are the character who match this:

"The World God Only Knows", "Bakuman", "Robotic;Notes", "Hyouka" and "Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun" |
Thanks to this process I feel I have a much stronger grasp
of Lilly. The character images not only provide me with an atmosphere I wish to
achieve but also allows me to describe and picture how I might animate Lilly,
Within the mood board you have Two gamer characters both confident in them self
regarding games. Two other character lay low around their peers attempting to
not waste their time and energy. I have also realized my interest of characters come more from Japanese anime over animated films.
Story beats
In terms of Story-beats they have made way but at the same
time held still. There are Small story's that I have conceptualized. Two of which
have been completed, However the other three I have partly done. The main issue
being I have an idea on how they might Start/Middle or End but not as a
collected piece. This has caused me to focus on storyboarding the two current
completed storys.
Another issue I have realized is that these Five stories
only make up the around half of the
Overall story I have previously imagined
and pitched to my supervisor at which time she did mention she might be worried
about the scope of the project. This is becoming more apparent, As I compare
them to my previous projects.
Storyboards
I started the storyboard thumbs on Sunday and by the end of
today i have reached the 14th story beat out of 42. However, I have stopped for
the night on this story because I want to pitch and discuss the ending of these
scene. The current story is establishing Lilly passion for games, However an
alternative route can be her interest in technology. Both sides have their own advantages
either earlier or later in the story. In
the original version It explains the way Lilly's actions when she meets
Mary, While the second version explains
Lilly actions and education later.
Character Profiles
At the moment the both profiles are complete to my satisfaction
but as I continue working on their stories I notice areas of the profiles that
need to be added the story's are allowed me to decide their attributes about
their family. However, I can't find the best words to describe them. One of the
more interesting things that has been happening is how often I am referring to
both the story and the action I wish the character to perform before deciding
how it will happen. The stories are being built around the characters profile
and personality while at the same time helping to build the profiles themselves.
One area of concern is the appeal of
these stories and I have realized... Sure the story is aimed to inform the
characters personality but is it even worth telling ? Would someone actually be
able to stay interested in these animations.....
Tomorrow I will be meeting up with my supervisor and this
will hopefully decide on the course of action my project will take.
