So been a while since I updated the Blog, Mostly due to a stronger focus on producing
the research proposal and once that was submitted I took the last week to take
time away from the project.
While writing the project a continuous amount of redrafting accord
this was because of the structure of the
proposal, I Knew what my point was and picked the subjects and titles that I
felt best described what I was trying to do. However, After many meeting with my project supervisor she
was able to help me conclude what the professional impact of my project was.
This was also the exact driving force for my interest of the research I was
doing. This was not identified until the final draft because my research and
focus had become wrapped around acting theory's and emotion, While other
content which I found equally important began to be undervalued.
In this final
draft we established that one of the professional outcomes I was aiming to
achieve was, Character Driven Animation over Animator Driven Animation. In this
context and backing by my project. I am specifically looking at techniques and
methods that focus on the characters being the focus of how they move, act,
think . basically making the character an person in their own right while the animators job is to
only move the character body for them. Comparing this to my meaning of animator
driven animation which is when the animator
makes the character act in way
they would not. Examples of this can be having the character do something the
animator thinks is funny to make the story more humorous however the characters
personality or character traits don't allow for this action to be possible.
After writing the proposal a methodology for character
driven animation appears as practical outcome and point of interest for other
character animators. This currently focuses on establishing a character and
know enough about them to be able to imagine how they would act if they were
alive themselves. An Animator would aim
to know them so well to be able to have this character perform under the theme
of Improvisational theater.
Next steps.
After taken this break, The primary focus of my work will
now be on pre-production assets.
Character Biographies, Story beats, Storyboards and Animatic are now mandatory
for the start of next semester. I have been working on Both Lilly and Marys Biographies
and up until now Lilly's character has
been the most rethought. She was originally a shy character with an interest in video-games. However the shy side was creating too many problems with imagining
her acting in certain situations she would have to encounter.
Her most recent concept is to have her as more of a dreamer
character. Because of her love for video games she doesn't engage in the real
world around her. When she is unable to play she becomes a daydreamer and gives
of an unapproachable vibe. This creates the distance needed from her and her
other classmates. This concept also
allows the Mary's character to become a obstacle for Lilly's as Mary is
competitive, emotional, expression ate and curious. This will allow the
starting of their relationship to be a challenge to them both. However from
this point both characters still need more development.
For the end of the week I Aim to have finalized both
characters biographies and back-story, This will also be followed with character mood boards which can describe both characters. Along with 3D Models
sheets showing their key emotional poses and expressions, This will be done
with the Eleven second club rig as it is the primary rig for both characters at
this time.
