Meetings, Methodolgy, Research AND DA FUTURE

Over the last week iv mostly been focusing toward the research proposal, Along with re reading and re writing my notes to refresh my head on the topics.

My Current Research question still stands as : How can character personality be created through the action and reaction of a character during an animated short?

I also formed an Aim which i was not sure if it was apply able and which i discussed with lynn.

"The aim of this project is to identify or construct a theory that can convey a character personality through Animation and Acting Techniques." However, What happened to Actions and Reactions ?
After much stressing and advice, I have came up with The Aim is the exploration of acting theory in character performance to find out if these techniques can enhance the creation of character personality. - Closer But still Not Right ( From my own point of view).

Though the first attempt to the Aim of my project was back from the attempt to construct a theory which is backed by my current research. I had found a template toward the components of personality from Isaac Kerlow. However not all the components applied as my project focuses on character animation.

  1. External Shape ( The Visual Design of the character)
  2. Silhouette
  3. Internal Structure (The Hierarchy of the skeletal structure -Rig)
  4. Facial Expressions
  5. Body Poses
  6. Timing
  7. Rhythm
From this I have been reconstructing it so that the research i have been conducting fits into the certain category's because I am focusing on character animation along with using a Education/Source Rig External shape and Internal structure do not directly apply. This has lead me to substitute it with topics which can relate in the same manner. I had also discussed these with Lynn, though we could not conclude anything that the time. However she did mention internal structure wasn't getting as much value as external shape from the example i had shown.

This is my current interpretation of my Critical frame work after our meeting.

1.External Shape – (Acting Theory – Character Performance – Theatrical Acting)
1.Body Posture  - (Responsive, Reflective, Fugitive and Combative)
2.Psychological Gesture  - (What hidden messages are being shown?)
3.Facial Expressions - (Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, Surprise, Contempt
4.Eyes - (Blinks – Display of  Thinking -> Conclusion -> Emotion ->  Action)

2.Internal structure – (Character Design -  Acting Theory – Method Acting )
1.Character Biography - (The foundation of who the character is.)
2. Thinking
3. Emotion
3.Timing & Rhythm
Context

However there is also topic not included due to lack of knowledge in the area at this time along with an issue of being more selective of the current example.
I believe my current methodology being qualitative, Inductive, Humanities and source research. As there is a heavy emphasis on Interpretation in both my research and the conclusions of both practice and in the project. The project did not start with a theory but is aimed towards creating one which in someways is the critical frame work that is used to identify the personality created.

At this stage i am hoping the next Progress presentation will clarify the value and if i am on the right path in this area. Once this has passed i can then re-evaluate this structure and adapt it accordingly.
