Pre-Production - New Concept design for Mary
Carrying on from this morning's comment, I decide to spend
today working on some new concepts for Mary's hair and clothes. My supervisor
suggested I created a template for Mary,
and try a few idea and clothes idea because Mary looks fairly similar to Lilly.
The image above is the template I drew ideally aiming to get some personality from
the frontal pose. While the profile was
mainly so I could draw the details of the hair from that angle. When it came to
actually drawing I was a little lost. Her original hair style was mid length
while her fringe would come just above her eyes. However, she didn't give off a
sport/wild or outdoor feeling.
I resorted back to anime references of characters I knew had
allot of energy to them. Though many of these hairstyles either resembled the
one I already had or something closer to Lilly's. So I decide to Google search, from this on a forum there few people talking
about how they wear their hair as people who work outdoors. The majority put
their hair into braids or ponytails, one
person particularly said why relating it to keeping their hair off of their
neck and out of the way during hotter days. This resulted in me considering
keeping Mary's hair mid length or short.
The above image was the first concept that came to mind, Her
fringed remained the same but I decided to tie her hair to the right hand side.
This is aimed toward the style its put in
ideally when she if facing forward
the tail will be resting in front and on her right shoulder. I also
place her in more outdoor clothing.
In this next Image I decided try another concept on the fair
making use of braids on her side bangs and creating a smaller ponytail. However
times I've seen this done is normally on long hair, so i thought I'd try it on
shorter hair. The result wasn't to pleasing, I also realized her fringe was now
almost exactly like Lilly's. In this image I also played around with her top to
make it more toward a tracksuit.
For the next image the type of sport Mary plays came more
into play, I wanted to see how she would look in a cap, considering the
advantages it would give her outdoors. Though, there is the issue of when she
gets indoors I couldn't picture her leaving her cap on. The hair here was
mainly shaped toward being able to fit through the claps in the back of it. I
also decided to try shorting her top and adding a hood.
The last test came about because I wanted a example of how
she might look when her hair was allot shorter, different from the back of
Lilly's hair and A completely different fringe from before. I find I like this
version but it would also be contested against the first concept. after the initial drawings were complete I began wondering how she would look in a cap
along with adding a longer tail to the back.
I stopped here mainly because I realized there wasn't much more
I wanted to try interns of clothes, There are two possibility here for the hair I like and I will most likely
experiment with them both and combining them but this would be on a template of
just the face instead of a full body.
On another note the next few hours will be focused more
toward refining the story and profiles so I can begun creating thumb nails and
new storyboards.
Personal development portfolio-
Drawing
ability is one of the known skills gaps for my project, I will be aiming to
draw my The characters more and trying
to get the most out of the poses and hopefully get my drawing into a more dynamic
result. The images bellow are concepts
that sprung up after working on Mary's new concept though it is more toward
practice than relating to story beats like the previous pose drawings.
